Ok, I’m going in big with my first post! Poor self-image is something I’ve always struggled with. I’m only just starting to get over my issues now that I’ve hit my 30’s!
This blog is based on all things self-image, confidence, and beauty. I’ve created ‘Dare To Glow’ to help you get over certain limiting beliefs around yourself that are holding you back from being authentically yourself. Also, to help you step out of your comfort zone and have more experiences before you feel it’s too late! (Although it’s never too late! *wink*)
If you want to start feeling good about yourself, then stick around. Your confidence will be soaring before you know it and you can start to relax about your worries.
What is Poor Self-Image?
To me, poor self-image is simply not liking yourself or parts of yourself. This can be both physical such as looks or mental like aspects of your personality. And this can create an image in your head that might not be what other people see. It’s about what you see in the mirror when you look at your own reflection and not liking what’s staring back.
In my case, I’ve always disliked certain features like my lips, my teeth, and my nose. This has caused me to think of myself as ‘ugly’ ever since I can remember! And not only that, but I also had a belief of how others saw me and again it was always negative.
Why is a Positive Self-Image Important?
Dealing with a poor self-image as a teenager and growing up had a significant impact on other areas of my life such as confidence and self-esteem.
This meant that it would stop me from doing certain things because of the fear of what other people would think about me. The worry of what other people saw me as was big and therefore impacted my thoughts and actions.
Therefore having a positive self-image is important for being able to live and be authentically yourself. This can sometimes be a key to happiness.
Why Do You Have a Poor Self-Image?
Sometimes pinpointing the actual time in your life that you started to feel this way can be difficult. It’s usually from the experiences you have in your childhood and the thoughts which led to those beliefs you came to have about those experiences.
When we’re younger we create beliefs a lot easier than we do as adults and some of those beliefs can stay with us all our lives if we don’t take action to correct them.
For example, your poor self-image makes you believe that you’re shy and an introvert when actually that’s not the case at all. It’s just the image you’ve come to accept of yourself and that means you’ll always act consistently in line with those beliefs.
What Does Your Poor Self-Image Stop You Doing?
Not long ago, I forced myself to dig deep and understand why I’m not where I want to be in life. I’ve had tendencies to procrastinate, make excuses, and lack focus when it comes to putting myself out there and being consistent in my business. When I analysed my behavior, I realised that it was all down to my poor self-image.
This issue has stopped me all my life. Ever since I was in school when I would be too shy and too scared to share my thoughts and feelings with people other than my friends because I didn’t want to draw attention to myself. I was always happy NOT to be the one in the spotlight. Looking back at this it makes me sooo sad that I felt that way.
When you think about your poor self-image, what has it held you back from doing and accomplishing in life? Make sure you write a comprehensive list. It’s this list that will motivate you to take further action to resolve this issue.
The First Steps You Need to Take
Recognising that you have a poor self-image is one thing but once you do it’s really about the actions you take going forward that are SUPER important!
#1 Self-Improve EVERY DAY!
What I mean by this is that you need to dedicate a portion of your day to self-improvement! I recommend just 10 minutes a day of either reading a self-improvement book, watching a video, or listening to an audiobook.
Start by listening to this:
#2 Re-write Your Self-Beliefs
You have the power of being able to think whatever you want! So stop thinking negatively about yourself!
Write down a belief about yourself that you want to believe. For example
“I am beautiful and people love me” or “I’m a badass goddess and I rule my mind”
Now I know that in order for us to believe something, we need evidence sometimes. So after coming up with your own positive belief, write a list of reasons why that’s true.
So if mine was “I am beautiful and people love me” I would write down a list of people who love me and a list of reasons why I’m beautiful. I would start with the smallest of things too. So one reason could be ‘Because I have big eyes’ or ‘Because I have long eyelashes’
Make sure to say your new belief to yourself every day!
#Take Action on Your New Belief
Remember that list I told you to write earlier, the one where you ask yourself what your poor self-image has stopped you doing in the past?
Well you’ll need to revisit it and do something on that list. And before you do, read out your new belief and watch something motivational.
Once you’ve done it, you’ll have a new reason that you can add to your ‘evidence list’ of why your new belief is true.
Then you repeat this as often as it takes for you to wake up and not have to consciously tell yourself that you are beautiful!
Meaning of Success For You
So when I say ‘success’, this word will hold a different meaning for everyone. I, myself, for example, don’t just think about financial success, but also health, love, and how I make an impact on the world we live in.
Now I just want you to think of what success means to you. Does money come straight to mind? Career maybe? I dare you to think about deeper and come to a conclusion of what you want to achieve, what will make you feel successful?!
Success & Self-Image
And to conclude this post, I hope you understand now why a positive self-image is important for you to be successful and how you can overcome your issues of negativity.
I Just want you to remember,
There will never be another one of you in this lifetime and that is pretty special – Zig Ziglar
